This is an overview of all the companies we have invested so far with the fund, and what is their latest status.
Tesseract (YC S17)
Satellites have been getting smaller and cheaper, and their propulsion systems have not caught up to date. Tesseract changed that - they built a system with a 2x performance for half the price. They have signed a contract with NASA, and their propulsion system will be used in their CAPSTONE mission in Dec 2020! They have also signed a second customer (OrbitFab), and are currently testing their hardware for low-earth orbit satellites (See video).
Boom supersonic (YC W16)
Boom is building an affordable supersonic aircraft. It is a 40-seat plane for business travel with a maximum speed of Mach 2.2, making it the fastest passenger aircraft. They closed their $100m Series B in early 2019, bringing their total funding to $141m. Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective led their round and included the Y Combinator Continuity Fund, Caffeinated Capital, and SV Angel. They just announced they became the first company to launch the first fully carbon-neutral aircraft program!
LPPFusion is building the first green fusion energy generator. In their long journey to recreate the power of the sun on Earth, they have achieved the highest confined temperature of any fusion experimental device, over 2 billion degrees, sufficient for hydrogen-boron fusion — producing a 1000 times more energy than their closest competitor. In March 2020, they just closed $600k on the Wefunder platform, bringing their total funding to $7.5m.
Experiment (YC W13)
In a mission to help democratize science, Experiment looks to fund the next wave of scientific research. They do so by building a community of scientists that can share ideas, discover together, and fund each other. So far, they have helped fund 940 projects, with almost 50k backers in the platform that have pledged a total of $9m.
In a mission to enable long term human presence in space, SpaceFab is creating the first commercial space telescope. They started developing two different satellite models — the Viewpoint, and the Midpoint — and just decided it made more sense to focus entirely on the Viewpoint as it has a more compelling pitch and higher margins. Since then, they've been working on a full-scale model that will be showcased in the American Astronomical Society.
